How Korean VAT is calculated
VAT (value-added tax) is a tax on the value added at each stage of supplying goods or services. For general taxpayers in Korea the rate is a single 10%. The formula depends on which figure you treat as the base.
| Base | Formula | Example (supply 1M) |
|---|---|---|
| Supply value → tax | Supply value × 10% | 100,000 KRW |
| Supply value → total | Supply value × 1.1 | 1,100,000 KRW |
| Total → supply value | Total ÷ 1.1 | 1,000,000 KRW |
| Total → tax | Total ÷ 11 | 100,000 KRW |
A tax invoice lists the supply value and the tax separately, and the total (price including VAT) is the supply value plus VAT. A business pays the output tax minus the input tax. File accurately via the National Tax Service (Hometax).
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
How is Korean VAT calculated?
VAT is 10% of the supply value. From the supply value, tax = supply value x 10% and total = supply value x 1.1. From the total, supply value = total / 1.1 and tax = total / 11.
How do I remove VAT from a total?
To get the supply value from a VAT-inclusive total, divide the total by 1.1. The VAT is the total divided by 11. For example, a total of 11,000 KRW is 10,000 KRW supply value and 1,000 KRW VAT.
What is the difference between supply value and price including VAT?
The supply value is the net transaction amount excluding VAT, while the price including VAT (total) is the supply value plus VAT. A tax invoice lists the supply value and the tax separately.
Does 10% VAT apply to every transaction?
A single 10% rate applies to ordinary taxable goods and services. Exempt items (agricultural products, medical care, education, etc.) and zero-rated items (exports, etc.) are not charged VAT or are charged 0%. This calculator uses the standard 10% rate.
Can simplified taxpayers use this calculation?
This calculator uses the 10% VAT for general taxpayers. Simplified taxpayers face a lower effective rate based on an industry value-added ratio, so their payable tax differs. Check the simplified tax amount separately with the National Tax Service.
