Korean comprehensive income tax applies progressive rates to the tax base: computed tax = tax base × rate − progressive deduction.
A local income tax (10% of the computed tax) is added on top to give the total tax burden.

Korean income tax brackets and how it is calculated
Comprehensive income tax is computed by applying progressive rates to the tax base, which is your total income (interest, dividend, business, employment, pension and other income) minus income deductions. Higher tax bases fall into higher brackets. The formula is computed tax = tax base × rate − progressive deduction.
| Tax base | Rate | Progressive deduction |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 14M KRW | 6% | 0 KRW |
| 14M - 50M KRW | 15% | 1.26M KRW |
| 50M - 88M KRW | 24% | 5.76M KRW |
| 88M - 150M KRW | 35% | 15.44M KRW |
| 150M - 300M KRW | 38% | 19.94M KRW |
| 300M - 500M KRW | 40% | 25.94M KRW |
| 500M - 1B KRW | 42% | 35.94M KRW |
| Over 1B KRW | 45% | 65.94M KRW |
For example, with a tax base of 50M KRW the rate is 15% and the deduction is 1.26M KRW, so the computed tax is 50M × 15% − 1.26M = 6.24M KRW. Adding local income tax (10% of computed tax) of 0.624M KRW gives a total of 6.864M KRW.
In an actual filing, tax credits and exemptions are subtracted and penalties added to reach the final tax. For employment income, check the salary-based burden with the Korea Net Salary Calculator, and tax on savings interest with the Savings Interest Calculator.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
How is the computed income tax calculated?
Computed tax = tax base x rate - progressive deduction. The progressive brackets are 6% up to 14M KRW, 15% up to 50M (deduction 1.26M), 24% up to 88M (5.76M) and so on across 8 brackets.
How much is the local income tax?
Local income tax is an additional 10% of the computed income tax. For example, if the computed tax is 3M KRW, local income tax is 0.3M KRW and the total burden is 3.3M KRW.
What is the tax base?
The tax base is your comprehensive income minus various income deductions such as personal deductions and pension contributions. The progressive rates are applied to this base to get the computed tax.
Why subtract the progressive deduction?
Progressive rates apply different rates by bracket, but for convenience the top applicable rate is applied to the whole base and then the progressive deduction is subtracted. The result is the same as computing bracket by bracket.
Is this result exact?
This is an estimate of the computed tax based on the tax base. It does not reflect tax credits, exemptions or penalties, so confirm the exact filing amount on the National Tax Service Hometax income tax filing screen.
